History
Who Was Joseph LeConte?
LeConte Middle School takes its name from the famous geologist and physician, Joseph LeConte. He was born in 1823, in Georgia and died in 1901, in Yosemite, California.

Joseph LeConte graduated from the University of Georgia and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He practiced medicine, studied with Louis Agassiz, and finally became a professor of science and chemistry. While he was a geology professor at the University of California, he led many geological expeditions and wrote a book about his studies of the Sierra Madre and Yosemite Valley. His contributions to geology include studies of the Cascade Range, the glaciers of the Sierra Madre, and the formations of mountains.

Our School’s History
Our school was founded in 1922, at 1316 North Bronson Avenue in Hollywood. It soon became known as "The School of the Stars". Some famous graduates of LeConte are: Yvonne De Carlo, Betty Grabel, Nanette Fabray, Yvette Mimieux, Stuart Whitman, Mitzi Gaynor, Carol Burnett and Jody Foster.

When LeConte opened, it was considered a very modern school. Every room had a telephone and each was connected to the main office. Mr. Otis Chandler was LeConte’s Principal from 1922 to 1946. There was a photography darkroom under the auditorium for making and editing movies and a greenhouse behind the auditorium which supplied plants and flowers for all the classrooms.

Although LeConte and its student body have changed in many ways over the years, they are still working together to live up to their motto. "Seek honor through service".

Our Magnet’s History
The Magnet School opened in the Fall of 1994, with 90 sixth and 90 seventh grade students. The student body increased by 65 eighth graders in the Fall of 1995. Currently we have 270 magnet students.

The Magnet Program integrates global awareness into the enriched core curriculum and the exploratory electives that are offered at each grade level. This unique interdisciplinary program enhances awareness of diverse cultures and stimulates critical thinking. Each magnet classroom provides a rigorous curriculum, which integrates technology in the instructional delivery system. The Magnet School is on Track A of the Concept 6 School Calendar.

We have enthusiastic and creative teachers who promote a global theme throughout the curriculum while utilizing technology.
